Description

RNFA Primary Responsibilities:

A Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is an experienced perioperative nurse who has completed additional education in the role diversity of the first assistant, including intraoperative knowledge and techniques necessary to assuming responsibilities of the first assist. The development of specific technical skills enables the RNFA to assist the surgeon with specific intraoperative procedures that are beyond the scope of practice for registered nurses without RNFA education and training.

The Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) has keen and accurate attention to detail. Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, stressful environment are a must. The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is responsible for providing operative assistance to the surgeon during major surgeries in the Operating Room.

 

Team Lead Primary Responsibilities:

To coordinate the day-to-day activities of Surgical Services, including but not limited to:

  • Surgical theatres 1, 2, and 3
  • Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) & Day Surgery area
  • Pre-Op Clinic

Organize and administer the educational components of the Surgical Services program and MDRD department in an integrated team approach.

It is understood that daily operations within the Surgical Services portfolio may require other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduated from an accredited baccalaureate program in Nursing
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) certification from credentialed program
  • Current certification with the Canadian Nursing Association (CPN(C))
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) designation
  • Current BLS and ACLS
  • Certification in IV Therapy with demonstrated ongoing competence
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in perioperative nursing in the scrub and circulating role preferred
  • Ability to function independently in a perioperative setting
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated well-developed verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills
  • Ability to function in a stressful environment
  • Ability to function as part of multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated qualities of leadership
  • Demonstrated skill in critical thinking and problem solving that result in expected outcomes
  • Demonstrated well-developed verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated competency in the skills of mediation, facilitation, negotiation, and delegation
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Principles of Continuous Quality Improvement
  • Ability to function independently as a registered Nurse in a peri-operative environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Infection Control. (Hand Hygiene, Chain of Transmission, Personal Protective Equipment)
  • Ability to participate in an on-call schedule and respond within 30 minutes
  • Evidence of personal and professional growth through continuing education
  • Willingness to complete peri-anesthetic and MDRD courses as required
  • Minimum of three (3) years working in a peri-operative environment
  • Knowledge of intraoperative and techniques
  • Knowledge and experience of First Nations culture an asset
  • Ability to meet physical and mental requirements of the position
  • Reliable attendance record
