JOB SUMMARY:

This role focuses on supporting the analysis, design, and implementation of data and application solutions under supervision with the emphasis on GIS systems. Collaborates with more experienced team members, learning to apply data-driven insights and assisting in the development of database and application systems.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Assist in Enterprise Application Systems Administration:

  • Support the administration of enterprise asset management systems (EAMS) with an emphasis on GIS functionality. Assist with basic configuration tasks and ensure smooth operation under the supervision of senior team members.
  • Assist in server and database management for enterprise applications like GIS and CMMS. Participate in routine system audits and performance monitoring to identify any potential issues that need resolution.
  • Provide basic GIS support, including troubleshooting common spatial data errors, conducting simple geospatial analyses, and updating GIS layers based on predefined specifications.

 

Provide Basic Technical Support:

  • Handle entry-level troubleshooting for GIS and asset management applications, addressing common end-user issues such as missing data, system configuration queries, or basic map interface errors.
  • Assist in documenting incidents in the service desk tool, ensuring that proper notes are taken regarding the problem, solution, and steps taken to resolve the issue.
  • Learn scripting and automation tasks using SQL, Python, or XML under the supervision of senior staff. Participate in simple automation tasks, such as setting up automated GIS reports or backup routines.

 

Support System Integration and Testing:

  • Assist in system integration efforts, particularly involving GIS data exchanges between EAMS and other systems (e.g., ERP, CIS). Learn how to map data flows and document integration points.
  • Help in the execution of system testing, focusing on GIS functionality. Assist with test data preparation, basic testing scenarios, and documentation of test results.
  • Support troubleshooting integration failures, shadowing senior staff to learn about common issues in data exchanges and how to resolve them.

 

Contribute to Basic Application Development and Configuration:

  • Participate in simple GIS tool configurations: Help with minor system adjustments, such as creating and modifying map templates, configuring layers, or setting up basic spatial queries.
  • Assist in custom application development for GIS tools, learning to write simple scripts (e.g., Python or Arcade) for basic geoprocessing or automation tasks.
  • Support database schema design by learning to create and update simple tables and queries. Assist in maintaining the database structure for asset management data under the direction of senior staff.
  • Provides first line technical assistance and training.

 

Support Business Intelligence and Reporting:

  • Contribute to the creation of basic EAMS dashboards and reports using tools like ArcGIS Online, Power BI. Assist with data preparation and generating maps or charts for analysis.
  • Participate in data analysis tasks, using spatial data to create simple reports or visualizations that help management make decisions related to asset management.
  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining BI tools, helping to ensure that the systems remain integrated with EAMS and provide accurate reporting.

 

Develop Technical Skills through Training and Mentorship:

  • Work closely with senior staff to develop technical skills, including GIS application development, database management, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Participate in training sessions to learn more advanced GIS functions and asset management workflows. Engage in knowledge-sharing activities with peers to improve understanding of enterprise systems.

 

Contribute to Project Tasks:

  • Assist in small-scale project tasks: Support system upgrades, integration efforts, or new software implementations by providing documentation, testing support, or configuration assistance.
  • Learn about vendor relationships by observing interactions with third-party software providers and participating in relevant discussions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related field; two (2) years of related work experience in collecting and interpreting GIS or similar work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all CCWA or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
  • Knowledge of structured design and analysis techniques.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as light work involving lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be very little, a job is in this category when it requires a good deal of walking or standing, or when it involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. To be considered capable of performing a full or wide range of light work, one must have the ability to do substantially all of these activities.
