THE OPPORTUNITY

As the Ideal Candidate You Have:

  • Ophthalmic surgeon who has an Ontario license and has been certified by the Royal College within the last seven years
  • Fellowship in Ophthalmology recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
  • Licensure or eligibility to practice in the province of Ontario (CPSO)
  • Strong communication skills with a compassionate, patient-centered approach to care
  • Proficient in comprehensive eye care for all age groups, including laser therapy, intravitreal injections, and cataract surgery with proven outcomes and resource efficiency
  • Experience in Retinopathy of Prematurity exams preferred
  • Ability to integrate CanMEDS roles to provide high-quality, ethical care
  • Eligible for credentialed staff membership at GBGH
  • Active Canadian Medical Protective Association membership
  • A commitment to professional development and a desire to establish roots in the Midland area

 

Role Overview

In this role, you will provide regional on-call services for LHIN 12, rotating 1 in 7, and offer peri-operative consultations for GBGH patients. Your outpatient care will encompass comprehensive services across surgical, pediatric, medical, and chronic care. The surgical focus will be on QBP-funded cataract cases, with additional responsibilities including minor lid and facial procedures, ophthalmic laser treatments, intraocular injections, and trauma cases. Your office will be equipped with three exam rooms, two full-time technicians, and in-office capabilities for intravitreal injections and advanced diagnostics, including OCT, IOLM biometry, topography, visual field, and fundus camera. Hospital resources will support you with YAG and Diode lasers, a minor procedure room, and an OR for cataract and complex surgeries.

GBGH is a 113-bed hospital located in Midland, Ontario, serving a broad and growing population across North Simcoe. Our catchment includes Midland, Penetanguishene, the Township of Tiny, the Township of Tay, Christian Island, Georgian Bay Township, and Springwater Township.

With an operating budget of approximately $80 million, GBGH employs more than 800 staff and is supported by over 100 active professional staff, 70 regional affiliates and consulting physicians, plus over 100 volunteers from our community. The hospital provides a full range of services, including acute care, rehabilitation, complex continuing care, diagnostic imaging inclusive of MRI, and a Level 3 Intensive Care Unit.

Significant investments are shaping the future of care at GBGH. This includes a 2,500 square foot expansion of the diagnostic imaging department to accommodate MRI services, a mammography program set to launch in fall 2025, and plans for a 50,000 square foot expansion to add 24 inpatient mental health beds adjacent to our Emergency Department.
