ABOUT THE ROLE

Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager – Indigenous Health Team, N’doo’owe Binesi, the Indigenous Peer Support Worker will work within the Indigenous Health Team including cultural and clinical health-related services across St. Joseph’s Care Group and collaborating with community partners. The focus will be on assisting clients facing complex mental health, homelessness, and addiction challenges to develop self-directed, recovery-focused wholistic wellness strategies that help them achieve their goals. This position is accountable for fostering a culturally safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for Indigenous individuals seeking care, ensuring that they feel heard, valued, and supported. This role is pivotal in bridging the gap between Indigenous communities and the healthcare system, promoting respect, dignity, and equitable care for all individuals.

 

The successful candidate will be a highly organized individual with strong initiative, flexibility, sound judgment, and excellent interpersonal skills. Responsibilities include providing one-on-one support to clients, helping them achieve their goals, develop new skills, and connect with community resources, as well as attending meetings as needed.

WHAT YOU BRING

Education/Experience:

  • An individual who is of Indigenous ancestry with an entry level understanding of Indigenous culture and tradition, worldview, history, ceremonies, and language.
  • Lived experience with homelessness, mental health and/or substance use challenges.
  • Have personal experience receiving services within the housing, mental health and/or addiction systems.
  • Grade 12 High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year experience providing peer support to Indigenous Adults living with and managing mental health and/or substance use challenges that are in active recovery.

 

Skills/Abilities:

  • Entry level knowledge of Indigenous cultures, languages, traditions, and spiritual practices.
  • Ability to work with diverse Indigenous communities, including youth, adults, families, and Elders.
  • Commitment to become a Certified Peer Supporter through completion of certification requirements and mentoring.
  • Commitment to honouring individuals’ rights to refuse assistance.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Self Care as it relates to Peer Support and Self-Management skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Recovery and the Stages of Change.
  • Demonstrates compassionate, people-centred care with dedication to supporting individual wellness.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated regular attendance at work and reliability.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin or Anishininimowin is preferred.

 

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
  • Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transporation.
  • May be required to work flexible hours (extended hours, evening/weekend work).
