THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Vice President, Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive, as the Director Professional Practice & Quality Improvement, you are a forward thinker and strategic leader who easily builds relationships and works closely with leaders, staff, physicians, learners, patient and family advisors, and community partners while continuing to support excellent care at GBGH. You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex and challenging situations. You have a passion for patient safety, high reliability in healthcare organizations, and quality improvement led from the bedside forward keeping the patient at the center of everything we do. As the Director, you will build on our established Professional Practice Model deliverables and shape strategies, that promote a just culture, empowering our teams to deliver the highest standards of care while proactively identifying and mitigating risks.

Your leadership will directly influence patient & family trust, staff engagement, and organizational directions. This portfolio includes Professional Practice for all regulated staff and patient support workers, Patient Safety, Enterprise Risk Management, Patient & Family Experience, Policy oversight, and Ethics. Provides strategic oversight for Accreditation processes and assigns operational leadership for preparation and execution.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of professional practice standards across all clinical disciplines, ensuring alignment with best practices and regulatory requirements.
    • Lead the organization’s quality improvement strategy—designing initiatives that drive measurable improvements in patient outcomes, safety indicators, and service experience.
    • Implement proactive quality improvement frameworks and actions to support clinical programs in information sharing, risk mitigation, and intervention.
    • Provide executive leadership and accountability for GBGH’s annual Quality Improvement Plan, including creation, submission, and ongoing monitoring.
    • Provide leadership for the enterprise risk management program, including incident reporting, quality of care reviews, recommendations creation and follow-through, and proactive risk mitigation strategies.
    • Champion a culture of patient safety, just culture, and high reliability by embedding safety principles into daily operations, training, and decision-making.
    • Collaborate with clinical leaders, staff, Professional Practice leaders, and frontline teams to integrate evidence-based practice into care delivery.
    • Execute the already in place Professional Practice Model components and Practice Sensitive indicators building a strong foundation for excellent care.
    • Monitor and report on quality, safety, and risk performance metrics to the executive team and Board, ensuring transparency and accountability.
    • Provides strategic oversight for Accreditation processes and compliance requirements relevant to healthcare standards and legislation.
    • Mentor and inspire a high-performing team, fostering professional growth and interdepartmental collaboration.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:

  • Regulated healthcare professional in good standing with your professional college.
  • Degree in a health-related field, quality improvement, and/or patient safety.
  • Master’s Degree in a health-related field, Quality Improvement and/or Patient Safety or evidence of enrolment into a program with a completion date planned.
  • Minimum of (5) years progressive experience in leadership and mentoring.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability within Professional Practice environments and within a unionized environment.
  • Training and/or certification in Quality Improvement, Patient Safety.
  • Training/certification and a demonstrated understanding and/or leadership experience of Enterprise Risk Management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of high reliability and just culture in health care.
  • Experience with leading Accreditation Canada process and audits in a hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated Knowledge of Quality Improvement processes, performance improvement, regulatory requirements, clinical quality guidelines, compliance, and policy development.
  • Strong data analysis capabilities, quality reporting, written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership, interactive and theoretical skills.
  • Demonstrated strong project management skills.
  • Excellent clinical, decision making and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt to change in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Demonstrated consistent punctuality and attendance record, maintaining a high level of reliability and commitment to performing duties with efficiency and effectiveness in previous roles.
  • Commitment to GBGH Values and Purpose Statement.
  • Certified Health Executive (CHE) is an asset.
  • As a partially designated French speaking organization, French verbal and written communication skills are considered an asset in this position.
