THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Manager of Professional Practice, Quality, Patient Safety, Risk Management and Patient Safety, this Specialist has a critical role responsible for achieving the organization’s goal of excellent patient care by providing the operational leadership and support for quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, patient relations, and policy procedure oversight. This is a highly collaborative role that builds and maintains strong relationships with leadership, staff, physicians, patient and family members & advisors supporting GBGH to build a culture of safety in all aspects of just culture and high reliability. This position manages all processes for patient safety incident management, performs root cause analysis, failure modes effects analysis and follows through on recommendations promoting safe patient care. The position works with our HIROC insurers and designs and supports education initiatives for leaders, staff, and physicians. In addition, manages the patient relations process, supporting leadership, physicians, patients and families. This is a highly analytical position that works with our decision support team to build reports & dashboards always carrying through with action plans for monitoring performance and safety. The position supports the development and implementation of the organization’s Quality Improvement Plan and Balanced Scorecards, leads operational preparation activities for Accreditation standards and provides operational coordination and support of the policy management system.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

- Builds organizational capacity to create a strong culture of patient safety, continuous quality improvement and facilitates the integration of quality improvement initiatives that are continuously monitored.
- Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality improvement processes and programs to continually improve the provision of patient/client/resident care.
- Supports Quality Review process with creation of recommendations and follow-through action plans for improvement.
- Supports Management, Executive Leadership teams, and physicians to develop and execute local quality improvement priorities and ensures that strategic information, quality improvement, and performance measurement initiatives are linked to strategic and operational priorities and activities.
- Works collaboratively with Managers, staff, and physicians to promote all domains of quality (including effectiveness, efficiency, accessibility, accountability, and sustainability, etc.) in clinical and operational processes and provides leadership and support for quality reporting to the Executive Leadership Team, Board of Directors, and relevant government bodies.
- Leads operational Accreditation preparation processes and supports compliance with national Accreditation standards, working collaboratively with leadership to embed standards into organizational policies, procedures, processes, and practices.
- Works collaboratively with the Professional Practice Leaders to implement best practice standards and guidelines.
- Leads the implementation and ongoing process of the HIROC Risk Registry across the organization.
- Maintains fiscal accountability by collecting and monitoring necessary fiscal and quality data, analyzes data appropriately, initiates and implements methods of cost containment in relation to the service/area, and justifies expenditures.
- Provides leadership and development support for identification of performance indicators across the continuum of care and provides consultative services regarding an array of quality methods used in high performing organizations (including Lean principles, concepts, tools, and methods).
- Supports program and department managers to analyze current trends and data in support of quality improvement and patient safety.
- Participates, as required, in regional and provincial quality and patient safety initiatives to support benchmarking and shared learning.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:
- Regulated Health Professional with an Undergraduate Degree required.
- Master’s Degree in a health-related discipline, Quality and/or Patient safety is preferred.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in leading healthcare-based quality and patient safety projects (hospital-based preferred), with demonstrated leadership in Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, Risk Management, and Accreditation Canada process preferred.
- Minimum two (2) years of progressive career experience demonstrating successful outcomes on a variety of quality performance indicators.
- Expert knowledge of quality and safety with the ability to introduce innovative approaches to change
- Sound knowledge of quality improvement methodologies, patient safety methodologies, service design, data management and reporting, and patient engagement
- Demonstrated ability to successfully lead a portfolio of projects simultaneously
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to identify trends, establish benchmarks, and provide credible analysis and recommendations.
- Self-directed strategic thinker bringing new approaches to quality and safety, service innovation, and performance management
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor and motivate.
- Expert in stakeholder management, with the ability to forge and maintain strong internal and external stakeholder relationships
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; experience working both independently and, in a team collaborative environment is essential
- Excellent decision making and critical thinking skills in a heathcare environment.
- Excellent verbal, written, communication and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of spoken and written English, with strong written and oral presentation skills
- Demonstrated ability to function effectively and adapt to change in a highly dynamic, fast-paced, continually changing environment.
- Demonstrated consistent punctuality and attendance record, maintaining a high level of reliability and commitment to performing duties with efficiency and effectiveness in previous roles
- Healthcare Risk Management Certification is considered an asset.
- Program Planning and Project Management training and experience is considered an asset.
- Patient Safety and /or Patient Experience Certification/program completion is considered an asset.
- As a partially designated French speaking organization, French verbal and written communication skills are considered an asset in this position.
