ABOUT THE ROLE
Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for comprehensive health services which include withdrawal management and primary care, in combination with health promotion, illness prevention, rehabilitation and support services in addiction and mental health. Key responsibilities include working with the nursing staff to initiate withdrawal management protocols, providing clinical support to safe sobering beds and assessing disposition after immediate or crisis care. The NP position will improve access to specialized treatment for Balmoral Withdrawal Management Services and Sister Margaret Smith Centre through the provision of comprehensive, specialized and advanced assessment, diagnosis and prescribing of medication for people with substance use disorder. They will collaborate in the transfer of care of individuals who have stabilized within withdrawal management program to primary care physicians for ongoing maintenance and support, or support primary care for those who do not have a primary care provider. The NP will promote positive health for individuals and communities at the individual, organizational, and community levels

WHAT YOU BRING
Education/Experience:
- Current unencumbered registration as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Active Professional Liability Coverage required
- Membership with RNAO or NPAO
- Opiate Replacement Therapy trained and experienced. If there are no applicants with who are trained in ORT, applicants who demonstrate an ability and desire to learn will be assessed and considered
- Experience in primary care settings (community-based preferred).
- Minimum of two years recent (within last 5 years) NP experience in a Mental Health and Addictions setting preferred
- Experience, knowledge and respect in the application of harm reduction and determinants of health theory and practice approaches to client care and engagement in promoting health & supporting recovery
Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge and experience with providing care at all stages of substance use from intoxication through withdrawal, and maintenance for all commonly abused substances (alcohol, opioids, nicotine, marijuana, and cocaine).
- Demonstrated ability to integrate in-depth knowledge of advanced nursing practice and theory, health management, health promotion, disease/injury prevention and other relevant biomedical and psychosocial theories.
- Demonstrated knowledge regarding the nursing process and its application, including the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities with high levels of critical and logical thinking, analysis and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons or facts.
- Demonstrated high levels of initiative, resourcefulness, flexibility and adaptability.
- Demonstrated health assessment/clinical skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative practice model as a member of an inter-professional team.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and teaching skills.
- Sensitive to the needs of a multicultural community and diverse populations.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Thorough knowledge and proficiency in current nursing procedures, nursing assessment, physical assessment and treatment measures.
- Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to manage workload and adapt quickly to a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
- Demonstrated regular attendance at work
Conditions of Employment:
- This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
- Registered member of Professional College in good standing
- Ensure appropriate Professional Liability Protection is available according to the requirements of the CNO
- Ability to work irregular hours
- Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation
