THE OPPORTUNITY

The Manager, Learning, Well-being & Engagement provides strategic and operational leadership for programs that enhance the employee experience and ensure a safe, healthy, and high-performing workplace. This role oversees three key portfolios — learning and development, employee engagement and well-being (occupational health and safety) — aligning them to the hospital’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.

The Manager plays a pivotal role in building a culture of safety, belonging, and continuous learning. Through partnership with leaders, unions, and employees across the organization, this role ensures that programs and practices support staff development, organizational effectiveness, and the physical and psychological well-being of all team members.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of organizational learning programs that build leadership capability, support career growth, and enhance performance across the hospital.
  • Oversee organizational mandatory learning modules and learning system and ensure alignment with legislative and accreditation requirements.
  • Partner with clinical and non-clinical departments to identify team building and learning needs and implement targeted training and education solutions.
  • Promote continuous learning and professional development opportunities at all levels of the organization.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance employee engagement, recognition, and organizational culture.
  • Lead the administration and action planning of employee engagement and experience surveys, working closely with leaders to implement meaningful improvements.
  • Oversee employee wellness and psychological health initiatives, promoting a culture of inclusion, respect, and resilience.
  • Support change management and organizational development initiatives that improve communication, collaboration, and retention.
  • Provide oversight and leadership in developing, implementing, and monitoring the hospital’s occupational health and safety (OHS) programs and policies to ensure compliance with legislation and internal standards.
  • Oversee the management of workplace injury and illness cases, return-to-work programs, and workplace accommodation processes.
  • Support Health and Safety Office in leading the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), ensuring effective communication and follow-up on safety matters.
  • Monitor key safety metrics and ensure timely reporting and corrective actions.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and development to staff.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and advisor to hospital leadership on employee engagement, learning, and safety trends and best practices leveraging the team’s expertise.
  • Contribute to HR strategy and continuous improvement initiatives that advance a healthy, inclusive, and high-performing workplace.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Health and Safety, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive HR experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Experience in a hospital environment preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as CHRP/CHRL, CHSC, or equivalent are assets.
  • Strong understanding of Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations preferred.
  • Strong understanding of psychological safety concepts.
  • Knowledge of best practices in organizational learning, employee engagement, and wellness.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced, unionized environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills with a collaborative leadership style.
  • Data-driven mindset with the ability to translate insights into practical actions.
  • Demonstrated consistent punctuality and attendance record, maintaining a high level of reliability and commitment to performing duties with efficiency and effectiveness in previous roles.
  • Excellent decision making and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, communication and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative and customer-focused approach.
  • Commitment to GBGH Values and Purpose Statement.
  • As a partially designated French speaking organization, French verbal and written communication skills are considered an asset in this Position.

Our dedicated team serves a diverse catchment area, including Midland, Penetanguishene, Township of Tiny, Township of Tay, Christian Island, Georgian Bay Township, and Springwater Township.
